Brotherhood Wines

Founded by a French Émigré called Jean Jaques in 1839, this is the USA’s oldest winery. In the late 19th century, the winery was purchased by the Emersons who used the wines to improve the production of the Brotherhood of New Life, an experiment in utopian communal living in the Hudson Valley. They renamed the winery Brotherhood at this time. It survived prohibition by making sacramental wine under new ownership lead by Louis Farrel. The Farrel family ran the estate until 1987. In 2005 a new partnership took control, including the Chadwick family of Errazuriz fame and the wines have seen a huge improvement.
