2016 Passito Sagrantino di Montefalco, Antonelli, Umbria (Half Bottle)

Very deep colour, the nose shows blackberry, blackcurrant and raspberry jam, backed by spice and leather. The palate is sweet with red fruits and raisins and lovely balance.

Vinous

The aromatics alone on the 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino Passito are worth the price of entry. This reminds me more of an Amaro than Passito, with an array of autumnal spices, wood tones, balsam herbs and depths of medicinal cherry. It’s silky-smooth and pliant in feel, also significantly less sweet than anticipated and lifted as well with ripe red berries, chocolatey nuances and inner rose. The 2016 finishes with medium length and remarkably fresh, leaving hints of mocha and cinnamon to linger. It’s worth noting that this confectionary delight is only 129 grams per liter of residual sugar.
