2019 Corton Clos Du Roy, Grand Cru Domaine Antonin Guyon (Magnum)

A 0.55-hectare parcel of 50 to 60-year-old vines, exceptionally sited mid-slope facing south-east. This vineyard is ploughed exclusively by horses, and the domaine’s parcels neighbour those of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Layer upon layer of dark fruits, with pressed flowers and a touch of clove adding complexity. 50% whole bunches included here, and the aromatic complexity and texture on the palate is perhaps a step above previous vintages. This is the pick of the offer for its unbeatable combination of terroir, quality, and value.

The 2019 Corton Clos du Roy Grand Cru is excellent, offering up aromas of sweet berry fruit, licorice, warm spices, rose petals and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated, it’s deep but fine-boned, with a more linear, tightly wound profile than the ampler, broader Bressandes. With time, however, I believe it will emerge as Guyon’s finest 2019.
