La Mancha

Vast vineyard in central Spain producing mostly dull wine destined for subsidised distillation. Some dynamic producers are now making very cheap servicable house wines. In the south of the region are some more ambitious estates, making rich oak aged reds based around Tempranillo and sometimes Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. Valdepenas is an extension of La Mancha with a better reputation.
